Coldplay - The Scientist

Coldplay – The Scientist

I was attracted to “The Scientist” by another Coldplay song when I was researching music videos to do my blog. Coldplay was introduced to me by my favorite soccer team, FC Barcelona, back in 2008 with the song “Viva la Vida.” This song resulted to be one of my favorite songs, which made Coldplay one of my favorite groups. The music video of Coldplay, “Viva la Vida,” lacked persuasion, but a friend recommended this other song by the same group so I gave it a try. The music video is called “The Scientist,” has very strong characteristics of persuasion. At first, the video starts very simple, but as it passes by and you put attention to the words and the action by the singer, you can see that he is appealing to ethos. The reason I say this is because the singer has related his lyrics to the main plot of the video: a car wreck. So he has authority in saying what he feels. As to logos, the artist has made the video to be very logical by mixing the lyrics plot of going back in time to the start with the actual plot of the video. The hardest mode of persuasion was pathos. The artist might be using the emotions of himself to prove that nothing is easy to start. He tries to connect the viewer with the video by his lyrics and strong video plot. How do you believe the artist has used persuasion in this music video?

  1. I really agree with your post alot. I feel like the one emotion pathos is really playing through this music video is regret. I imagine that as he walks through the town all he can think about is the car wreck that ensued.

  2. Thank you for doing the music video of my favorite song! I think the pathos is very strong in this music video because by the end you see that he was driving the car that got into the accident that injured/killed his girlfriend. The lyrics gain more meaning and it brought up a lot of sad emotions the first time I watched the video years ago. I agree with your interpretation of ethos because it's easy to understand why he's singing the lyrics after being in an accident.

  3. Adding add to what my peers have said , I felt that at the beginning logos is addressed in a peculiar way by surrealism when the performer is traveling back in time which to me portrays the exact opposite which is the impossibility of time traveling. The video appealed to me through ethos because the past I believe is something that can motivate us as much as burden us emotionally.

  4. I agree with everyone's responses on this video. I think having the video happen in reverse strongly incorporates pathos. For me, this played on my curiosity. The entire time I was wondering what it was that the video was leading up to. It definitely made a stronger statement than if it had shown everything as it happened- this way it was almost like you were going back in his mind. It also used ethos to connect the sad lyrics/rhythm of the song with the tragic car accident.
